The Hoops of Hope All-Stars Free Throw Shoot-a-thon & Concert will take place this weekend at the King of Prussia Mall – here are the details:
Date: Saturday, July 31, 2010
Time: 10:00am – 10:00pm
Details: The Hoops of Hope All-Stars event is aiming to raise over $200,000 to benefit AIDS orphans and their communities in Africa. The event will bring together over 1,200 shooters, attempting over 600,000 free throws – each shot helping transform the life of an AIDS orphan in Africa. There will be a celebrity shoot out, 75 basketball courts in action, a kid’s zone and a live evening concert.
Background info: This effort was first started by a nine-year-old, Austin Gutwein, who was moved to action after seeing a video by World Vision, a humanitarian relief organization, about a girl from Zambia who lost both her parents to AIDS. Austin garnered sponsors that would pay $1 for each shot he made. Austin shot 2,057 free throws, one for every child orphaned from AIDS during an average school day. Hoops of Hope has since raised over $1.8 million to build a school, medical clinic, water system and two orphan hope centers in Zambia.
